Caribbean Stud Growing In Popularity
A quick and dirty Caribbean Stud Poker how-to
Caribbean Stud Poker has become one of the most popular games in many casinos. It’s an easy game to play, the odds are fair and the payouts can be very profitable. It is similar to 5-card stud, except the players are wagering against the dealer and not the other players at the table. One other attractive aspect is the progressive jackpot that can range from $10,000 to $250,000 if a player gets dealt a royal flush.
To start the game, the player and the dealer are dealt five cards. You can look at all of your cards right away and the dealer has one card turned up for you to see. There are no draw cards in Caribbean Stud Poker so you play the entire game with the cards you are dealt with from the beginning. From these five cards, you win if your hand is better than the dealer’s.
There are three different wagers in Caribbean Stud.
- The Ante Bet: This wager is mandatory and must be made prior to starting each game. This wager cannot be less than the table minimum and is forfeited if the player loses the hand.
- The Bet: If the player decides not to fold and to continue playing with their hand, after seeing the five cards he/she has been dealt, they must make a bet equal to double the value of their ante bet for that game.
- Side Bet: This wager is made prior to the cards being dealt. By making this $1 bet, the player is eligible to win one of the progressive jackpots should his/her hand be sufficient.
If the dealer does not have a hand of Ace-King or better, he does not “qualify” and the player wins his bet. However, the only portion of the bet the house pays is the ante. The main bet is simply returned to the player.
If the dealer has a qualifying hand, the player must have the better poker hand to win. The player also gets the benefit of a pay table that gives the players a bonus for two pair or more.
